Time to think about Boys and Girls State - By Dave Tanguay

It is time to again think about going to Boys State and Girls State. For the past two years American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 has sent five juniors from Windham High School to Boys and Girls State. Last year three girls and two boys who were selected to the State conventions from Windham.

The local Legion Post is looking for highly motivated juniors to attend this week long emersion program to be held in June at a Maine college. The State convention provides opportunities for Maine juniors to participate in a program that supplements and reinforces their classroom courses and helped them to better understand the process of governing.

Attendees role-play as they campaign for various state positions and as they organize and carry out the function of government. This is an excellent opportunity to learn how government works.

Sponsorship is through the American Legion Department. of Maine with financial support for two candidates provided at the local post level. The only direct cost to attendees is the cost of transportation to and from the college location. Girls State nominations are due to the State by May 1, 2014 and Boys State forms are due to the State by June 1, 2014.

Organizations or businesses wishing to sponsor a candidate may do so by contacting Field-Allen post financial officer Dave Tanguay (892-1306). Full or partial sponsorships are welcome. Last year the Post was blessed with three additional sponsorships that allowed participation of five local students.

Additional information will be provided in the coming weeks. Students interested in the program should submit their names to their High School guidance office. For additional information please contact the post Americanism officer Dennis Marshall at 627-1010.
