Environmental educators begin at Portland Water District

The Portland Water District (PWD) welcomes its 2014-15 school educators. Education staff will begin reaching out to schools this month and will connect with over 1,000 local students per month in Greater Portland and the Lakes Region.

Carina Brown returns to PWD for her third year as an environmental educator. She joined PWD in 2012 after a summer internship leading salt marsh ecology tours at the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center. In addition to working on school programs, Carina’s work at PWD has also included coordination of Sebago Lake Land Reserve events and source protection efforts. Carina graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a degree in biology. Originally from South Paris, Carina now lives in Portland.
Hannah Shute joins PWD this year as an environmental educator. Hannah has considerable freshwater quality monitoring experience, gained at both the Cobbosee Watershed District and the Presumpscot River Watch, where she also coordinated volunteer monitoring efforts. A graduate from the University of Southern Maine’s Department of Environmental Science, Hannah has experience working with youth, planning events, and volunteering within her community. Hannah hails from North Yarmouth, but currently lives in Portland.

The Portland Water District conducts interactive, school-based education programs and provides educational resources to foster appreciation, understanding, and protection of our water resources.
