Meet the Candidates - State Senate District 26 - Bill Diamond and Kaile Warren

State Senate District 26 serves portions of Windham, Raymond and Casco. Bill Diamond and Kaile Warren are competing for that seat.

Bill Diamond is 69 years old, married to June with two grown daughters and eight grandchildren. He holds a BS in education and a master’s degree in education administration. He has owned his own business for 34 years and was an educator for 20 years. He runs and works out daily, practices karate, and enjoys reading.

What inspired you to run for Senate District 26?
The sluggish economy, the lack of good jobs and an inadequate infrastructure, roads in disrepair, are all reasons that I’m running to help this senate district. I also want to set a new tone of working together in the legislature.

What skill set do you bring to the table?
Being a business owner, former teacher, legislator and Secretary of State provides me with excellent skills for the job. Having volunteered with several local groups and organization I’m very familiar with our people and their needs.

If you had to choose one issue to champion for where your home district is concerned, what would it be and why?
I would try to bring more jobs to this area and improve our infrastructure including improved roads. Providing a quality education, including protecting children from sexual abuse, is essential.

Diamond feels that working more closely with the MDOT is integral to seeing some of the area’s infrastructure needs addressed. He explained, “I would like to serve on the transportation committee in order to work more closely with DOT to bring local road repair and maintenance needs to a higher priority level. We really get them out here to see some of the work that we need to have done.”

From a state-wide perspective, in your opinion, what is the single most important issue that the governor and legislature should be addressing?
Improving Maine’s economy and increasing job opportunities are essential, however, democrats, republicans and independents in the legislature must start working together to achieve these successes.

Many polls indicate that voters are fed up with partisan politics. Do you feel that there is a partisan polarization in Augusta? If yes, how will you proceed should you win election?
Excessive partisan politics dominated the recent legislature. We can change that by working together. I have a long record of working with all political groups in the legislature which is the reason for my widespread bipartisan support in this election.

Why should the voters in Senate District 26 vote for you?
I will stand up for the people in my senate district and work to create jobs, repair our roads, improve our schools and pass laws to protect our children from sexual assault, including strengthening penalties for child sexual predators.

Kaile Warren is 55 years old, and has shared 17 years with his partner Donna. He is a Greely High School graduate and works in real estate development. He enjoys landscaping, interior design, photography and chess.

What inspired you to run for Senate District 26?
Toby Pennels and his courageous family. Additionally, people are fed up with smooth talk and thoughtless government actions. I have fought the David vs. Goliath battle and won. I know what it takes to be successful. The Lakes Region Weekly described me as, “a business-savvy, strong-minded tax-cutting councilor."

What skill set do you bring to the table?
The ability to put people in a position to be successful. I have been a guest speaker at homeless shelters across America. I have also held court with some of the most influential people in the nation. Listening well is one thing. Relating to all people is the difference I bring.

If you had to choose one issue to champion for where your home district is concerned, what would it be and why?
Welfare reform. Once the government gives people something, it is really hard to take it back. Thus, leaders need to be very shrewd in their decision making process. I will use my full business acumen to correct past mistakes. Note: Welfare reform and crime prevention must be of mutual concerns.

Warren readily admitted that he is in favor of some level of drug testing for welfare recipients, but that his concern is an increase in crime when addicts are removed from the system. Furthermore, he feels that any welfare savings will be expended in the criminal system. He explains, “I would work to come up with a phased in process to provide a mitigation system for addicts removed from the welfare system. If at the end of the day welfare and criminal reforms don’t move society forward, it simply isn’t progress.”

From a state-wide perspective, in your opinion, what is the single most important issue that the governor and legislature should be addressing?
Curbing the liberal spending of tax dollars. Businesses cannot thrive as they should, nor will businesses come to Maine, if the basic operations of state government are not sound and conducive to business development. Maine is heading in the right direction, but the effort needs more horsepower. I can help build a solid foundation. I have built them for years.

Many polls indicate that voters are fed up with partisan politics. Do you feel that there is a partisan polarization in Augusta? If yes, how will you proceed should you win election?
Yes. Straight party voting puts the polarizing figures in office. As a republican, I want democrats to know that it is "ok" to vote for me. I have common-good and human interests at heart. I will proceed by making well-reasoned, shrewd, higher-ground decisions.

Why should the voters in Senate District 26 vote for you?
I have had noted business success. I have also been bent-over-backwards, but not broken, by a wrongful government action. The courage, intelligence and sheer determination that it took to beat the government are the same qualities you will have on your side. I will be the senator who will stand stronger and longer for you.
