Over the past few weeks American Legion Post 148 has been
providing information to local high school juniors about the exceptional
leadership program: Boys State and Girls State.
As in previous years, the interest level has grown to the
point that the Field-Allen Post and Auxiliary Unit funding cannot cover all the
qualified candidates who would like to attend their respective state conventions.
Several years ago, the Post considered itself lucky to have one interested
candidate. Moving ahead, in the past five years, interest has soared and the
Post and Auxiliary have been able to meet these needs (with some outside
support) and to send up to seven delegates (collectively) to their respective
conventions.
Cost for the program continues to increase. The Post and
Auxiliary financial resources, however, currently limit our sponsorship to two
girls and two boys. There is normally more interest than available funding. As
a result, the Field-Allen Post would like to extend the offer, again this year,
to any citizen, organization or business who would like to insure that a girl
or boy from the junior class can see first-hand, our democracy in action.
Full sponsorship for Boys State has increased to $300 and
Girls State is $320. Full or partial funding would be greatly appreciated. Please contact finance officer and Post Adjutant,
Dave Tanguay with questions - or if you can sponsor a candidate for this worthy
cause. He can be reached at: 892-1306.
If you would prefer to remain anonymous, you may send a
check to: American Legion Post 148, PO Box 1776, Windham, Maine, 04062, and
mark it Boys or Girls State.
