Book and Food Mobile to make summer stops in Windham

The Windham Public Library and Age-Friendly Windham have announced that they have received a grant from the Maine Community Foundation for a Book and Food Mobile this summer.

In conjunction with RSU 14 and the Windham Parks and Recreation Department, the Book and Food Mobile vehicle will visit four stops in Windham on Thursdays in July and August to deliver free food and books for anyone who visits the stop, no questions asked.

Planned stops on Thursdays include the South Windham Fire Station on Gray Road (Route 202), the East Windham Fire Station on Falmouth Road, the Windham Public Library at 217 Windham Center Road, and Unity Gardens apartments, an AVESTA senior housing facility at 124 Tandberg Trail in Windham.

The initial schedule of stops will be from 11 to 11:45 a.m. at the South Windham Fire Station and from 12:45 to 1:30 p.m. at the East Windham Fire Station. From 2 to 2:45 p.m., the Book and Food Mobile will stop at Unity Gardens apartments, followed by a stop from 3:15 to 4 p.m. at the Windham Public Library.

Both Windham Public Library Director Jennifer Wood and WPL Children’s Librarian Samantha Cote say that this has been their dream for a while, and they are looking forward to trying a new way to support the Windham community.

Food will be sourced from the Windham Food Pantry, local farmstands, the Windham Community Garden, and from area grocery stores. Books will be provided through donations and Scholastic Literacy Partnerships.
