Windham
Adult Education teachers Steve McFarland and Mae Morrais were honored with
awards at the annual Maine Adult Education Association Conference held at Colby
College recently.
McFarland
received the Special Recognition/Distinguished Service Award, and English for
speakers of other languages (ESOL) teacher, Mae Morrais was recognized as
Academic Teacher of the Year.
Adult
Education Director Tom Nash cited that McFarland’s dedication to improving the
lives of adult learners, his talent as a grant writer and math teacher, his seven
years advising and coordinating responsibilities with our successful College
Transitions program, his unselfish work with the local Rotary Club and Sebago
Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce as well as his generosity with establishing a
local adult education scholarship program along with his wife Nancy, were all
factors in his receipt of the award.
Morrais
has been teaching in the ESOL program at WRAE for the past two years and has
demonstrated a high level of professionalism, preparedness, flexibility and
compassion for her teaching and her adult students. She has worked tirelessly
to create curriculum with individual learner goals in mind and is constantly
looking for ways to improve her student’s learning through exploring innovative
classroom practices. Lisa Robertson, WRAE ABE Coordinator and Lead Teacher
stated that “we are a better program because of Mae’s dedication to her
students, her own self-improvement and strong commitment to the success of
WRAE.”
