Jonathan Burnham, owner of Maine Pawn and Jewelry in North Windham, recently won an online satellite tournament with a $5,000 prize package including a $3,500 buy-in to the World Poker Tour’s Borgata Open main event. Also included with the prize is a VIP six night stay at the Borgata in Atlantic City with travel and expense money.

Burnham had to beat out a field of 2,056 players in a
Club WPT winner-take-all satellite. “There was
no second place,” explained
Burnham. “You had to outright win the whole thing. I was pretty excited and a
little shocked when it was all over. This is by far the biggest win I’ve ever
had playing poker anywhere.”
Burnham plays occasionally at Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun,
along with some local home games from time to time. He also can be seen playing
at The Veterans Veteran’s Association game located at Dena’s in Windham. All
are mostly small stakes but he says they’re a lot of fun. He also states that
there are many talented local players in this area.
As for the big win, Burnham credits his mother, Phyllis
of Raymond for giving him poker advice. “She plays online more than I do and
she’s really great!” Burnham said. “She shared her secret formula with me right
before the tournament started. The whole way through, I kept hearing her words
of advice and making decisions with a mix of my own experiences and her formula
in mind – and it worked! I couldn’t have done it without her. Now I get to try
my luck against the big time pros and I’m going to have fun, play my game and
see what happens. You just never know.”
The tournament begins Sunday, September 17 and will end
on Friday, September 22. The Final table will be televised on the World Poker
Tour television.
Many of the top poker pros from around the world will be
competing in this event. Last year’s winner was 2012 WSOP runner-up, Jesse
Silvia, who beat out a field of 1179 players with the top prize of $821,811.
