Opportunities abound for substitute teachers in RSU14 By Lorraine Glowczak

For those who want to add a second income to meet family needs, looking to gain experience in education and, at the same time, do their part in helping young people reach their own goals and contribute to society’s future, RSU14 continues to accept applications for the position of substitute teachers.

“Substituting is also a great way to get a foot in the door,” explained Martha Vance, assistant to RSU14 Principals. “Many of our subs have been hired as long term subs, ed. techs and noon monitors. Noon monitor subbing is always a great start. The hours for monitoring are 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.”

Although all of the schools in RSU14 are in need of substitute teachers, the Windham Primary School is the one school with the greatest need.

There are a few requirements to be considered as a substitute. “The sub needs to have a high school diploma,” said Vance. “Ed Tech 111 is the best certification to have if they do not have a teaching degree but a high school diploma will allow you to sub also. The more education [you have] the better and the better the pay.  [Being] responsible, trustworthy, friendly and the love to help kids are necessary.”

To apply, simply go to the RSU 14 website, (www.rsu14.org), and go directly to the “Departments” tab. In that tab, choose “Human Resources Department” and from there chose “Job Openings.”
“Once the application is completed, our Human Resource Department will call to set up an appointment for interview,” stated Vance. “Once paperwork is completed, central office adds [the] name to our sub list.”

For those who might enjoy additional help and support, there is a training class available. “We have a class at Adult Education [that] subs are encouraged to attend for training information” began Vance. “Once someone has applied, he/she could come to observe a class to see what it is like, if they wish.”

The Windham/Raymond Adult Ed offer classes from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for four Mondays starting on September 11.  First meeting is at the high school and the second meeting is at the High School and Middle School, third one is at the Raymond schools with the fourth one at Manchester School.
