American Legion Contest - By David Tanguay

Attention all high school students in the Windham Raymond school area. American Legion, Field-Allen Post 148 is inviting you to participate in the 77th annual Legion Oratorical Scholarship Program. The Oratorical Contest has been held since 1938 and designed to instill greater interest in the U. S. Constitution. Additionally, the program develops leadership skills and fosters in the students an ability to speak and think on their feet. Over $3 million has been awarded in scholarships under this program at the local, state and National level. At the National level awards last year were given for $18,000, $16,000 and $14,000. Scholarships are also awarded at the state ($1000) and local level ($200).

The competition is held in two timed phases. Each student will be given an oral presentation on some aspect of the Constitution that last about eight to 10 minutes. The second phase is designed to test the student’s understanding of the subject by responding in three to five minutes to a randomly selected question selected on the day of the competition.

For further information, students (or parents) can go to www.mainelegion.org and click on programs and then “Oratorical”. Additionally, students may contact the Post Americanism Officer, Rodney Voisine at 892-2917 or HMX1marine@gmail.com.

The state level program will be held at Thomas College in Waterville on February 14, 2015. Local contest will be held in January 2015 (Date TBD).
