A Veterans Day ceremony and open house,
hosted by Windham VFW Post 10643, will be held at the Windham Veterans Center
on Tuesday, November 11th at 11 a.m., VFW Commander Willie Goodman announced.
The public is invited to attend the ceremony and the American Legion Auxiliary
will be providing refreshments.
CMSGT John Herrick of Maine's Army National
Guard will be our keynote speaker and patriotic songs will be performed by the
Windham Chamber Singers. Boy Scout Troop 805 will be in attendance assisting the
veterans. The winners of this year's VFW sponsored essay competitions will be
introduced and they will read their essays. The theme for this year's Patriot's
Pen, grades four through eight, is "Why I Appreciate America's
Veterans" and the Voice of Democracy theme, grades nine through 12, is
"Why Veterans are Important to Our Nation's History and Future".
Following the program, in memory of our comrade Stuart "Toby"
Pennels, we will dedicate a granite bench in our Memorial Garden. The Windham
Veterans Center is located at 35 Veterans Memorial Drive. Turn right just
before Friendly’s Restaurant and follow Memorial Drive to the end.
